Alissa Camacho, MS, LPC, LMHC, CCATP
Coping skills aren’t about fixing yourself. They’re about learning how to handle the messy parts of life without completely falling apart. In individual therapy, we’ll look at what’s getting in your way and what’s already helping (because you probably have more tools than you realize). Together, we’ll introduce new skills, and fine-tune what’s working so you can get the most out of it. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s finding realistic, sustainable ways to manage life’s challenges, from stress and anxiety to relationship tension, the everyday mental health concerns that so many people face. As a therapist for coping skills in Austin, my job is to support clients by providing professional counseling that helps you move toward a more fulfilling life.

What to expect from the therapy process
The first session
The first therapy session is a great opportunity to get to know you. We’ll talk about some of your background history, what’s been hard lately, what you’ve already tried, and what kind of support you’re hoping for. Think of it as the starting point of your wellness journey. Don’t worry, it’s not a pop quiz on your feelings!
01
Building the foundation
Together, we’ll identify what’s keeping you stuck and start building coping tools that fit your life and make the day-to-day more manageable as part of your mental health treatment. This step is where we use our insight to develop meaningful action to support you through your mental health challenges. We’ll use therapy techniques like cognitive behavioral therapy and a person-centered approach to help you feel grounded and understood in a supportive environment.
02
Practicing & adjusting
Once you’ve got a few coping strategies under your belt that align with your mental health care goals, we’ll focus on applying them to the real-life situations that you’ve been struggling to cope with. This is where a lot of the real growth happens. If something doesn’t click for you along the way (and sometimes it won’t), we’ll work together to modify until it does. Mental health counseling is meant to be flexible. It's counseling that adjusts to your actual needs. It’s not a one-size-fits-all, and that’s one of the best parts about it!
03
Growth & independence
Throughout the therapeutic process, you’ll begin to notice small but meaningful changes: less emotional spirals, better boundary-setting skills, and a stronger sense of control. My goal is to help you feel more equipped to handle life’s ups and downs and manage the symptoms tied to your mental health conditions or anxiety disorders, so that you can move forward with confidence, clarity, and a little more self-compassion.

How therapy helps you build real-world coping strategies
Common reasons why people seek therapy for coping skills
Everyone struggles at one time or another. Therapy just helps you find better ways to deal with it than bottling it up, or erupting like a volcano! People often come to therapy when they realize their current ways of coping just aren’t cutting it anymore, or when stress starts showing up in ways they didn’t expect. This becomes particularly apparent when behavioral issues begin interfering with your daily life.
Here are some common reasons people reach out for help:
Feeling overwhelmed by daily stress that eventually turns into anxiety
Difficulty managing emotions or becoming very reactive in certain situations
Relationship challenges and family conflict that leave you feeling drained
Difficulty setting boundaries or saying no without feeling guilty
Major life transitions (marriage, career changes, divorce, moving, loss)
Struggling with self-esteem or constant self-criticism
Recovering from trauma or navigating post traumatic stress disorder
A desire for better emotional regulation and overall mental wellbeing
Feeling stuck in a cycle of negative thought patterns
Managing symptoms of mood disorders like depression or bipolar disorder
FAQs about therapy

Evidence-based approaches for therapy are reliable and effective for learning how to cope effectively. Some methods that offer great coping strategies include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, and trauma-informed care. These methods help you understand the “why” behind your reactions and teach you how to respond differently. Combining these with a person-centered approach allows the therapy process to feel tailored and customized to your needs.

The goal is to help you learn strategies that will make daily life feel more manageable. Some examples include grounding exercises, emotional regulation tools, healthy boundary-setting, and ways to communicate more effectively. Some of these might sound familiar to you, while others will be new additions to your toolkit. The goal is to create a set of skills that fit you and actually work in real situations.

The truth is most of us weren’t taught how to manage our emotions. We just learned to deal with it. A lack of coping skills can come from several things, like childhood experiences, trauma, chronic stress, or simply not having healthy examples of coping growing up. Thankfully, these skills can be learned at any stage of life! And it just so turns out that therapy gives you the space to do that with support and direction from professional counselors.
